Promotes Music Literacy

Back to Top

AYS stands out among other children's choirs in Atlanta because we concentrate on music literacy.

Working at their own pace, either independently or with Staff and volunteer coaches, Singers master a series of musical skills that are both challenging and rewarding.  Not only do they become better musicians, they also build strong foundations to support their future pursuit of music degrees in college. In fact, numerous AYS Alumni have placed out of first semester college theory and ear training based on what they learned through AYS.

Singers must complete various levels in the AYS Vocal Technique & Sight-Singing Workbook in order to advance within AYS.  Singers hone and acquire useful musical skills in the AYS Workbook at AYS Summer Music Camp, during rehearsals, at monthly Workbook Sessions, and through individual practice at home.  There is no fee for Workbook Sessions.

Tours

Participate in Training, Regional or Major Tours

Touring with ATLANTA YOUNG SINGERS is an incredible learning experience and a time-honored tradition for our Singers. The primary purpose of Tour is to educate Singers; performances and competitions are part of that education. Tours are organized around a major event in a city’s cultural community such as a significant music festival. Touring at all levels offers opportunities to:

AYS Summer Music Camp

Rising 4th -9th Grades

AYS Summer Music Camp and Youth Chorale Retreat are additional education outlets that provide learning activities for Singers while helping them establish good relationships with AYS staff and other Singers. All Singers are expected to attend AYS Summer Music Camp/Youth Chorale Retreat to officially kick off the season and develop required music skills.

Camp is offered for one week in late June through mid-July to rising 4th - 9th graders. This overnight camp experience uses music as the vehicle to teach children how to work with others. Camp is open to anyone, including non-AYS friends – no audition is required.

Youth Chorale (rising 10th - 12th grade) is offered a similar retreat experience during a weekend in September.

The venue for both AYS Summer Music Camp and Youth Chorale Retreat is Camp Dixie.

Partial scholarships are available based on financial need and commitment of Singer.

Singers who have not enrolled in AYS are also invited to register for AYS Summer Music Camp! Email info@aysc.org for more information!
